Abstract
1,084,445. Continuous heat treatment furnaces. B.T.U. ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Dec. 1, 1964 [Dec. 3, 1963], No. 48847/64. Heading F4B. A transition section separating muffle sections 2 and 4 of a continuous furnace through which sections hydrogen and oxygen are circulated respectively, comprises parallel plates 16, 18 welded to said sections 2 and 4, a cylindrical perforated portion 24 welded to the periphery of plates 16, 18 and to which are welded baffles 50, 52, 58, 60 and a central partition 54 housing a toroidal member 66 with holes on its inner surface through which nitrogen is passed to form a gas curtain between the hydrogen and oxygen. A combustion chamber 44 is formed between the portion 24 and a cooling jacket 38. Water is passed in at 40 and the outlet 42 is placed concentrically with the outlet from the combustion chamber in order to impart a suction of combustion gases therefrom. Articles to be heat treated pass on a conveyer 10 moving on a perforated plate 8 through the transition section, hydrogen passing into the combustion chamber 44 between plates 16, 50, 52, 54 and oxygen through the spaces between plates 18, 60, 58, 54. The nitrogen from the toroidal member 66 forms a barrier between these two gases. A spark plug 74 ignites the cooled combustion gases in the combustion chamber 44.
