Abstract

In the production of cast iron the metallic charge is melted, preferably in a cupola, in the presence of calcium carbide having a melting temperature below 1500 DEG C. The carbide is preferably introduced into the furnace in a container, which may be of combustible material or of a non-combustible material such as sheet iron. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 696,697 and 812,410.
