Abstract

<PICT:0498372/III/1> A reagent for softening and de-acidifying water and consisting of magnesia and calcium carbonate is obtained by heating dolomite or mixtures containing magnesium and calcium compounds in an atmosphere containing carbon dioxide, the relation between the temperature and the part pressure due to carbon dioxide being such as to correspond to a point on the diagram lying within the area A B C D, and preferably within the area E F G H. Heat treatment under the specified condition may follow a period of heat treatment at higher temperature. A rotary furnace through which gas containing carbon dioxide is passed in the same direction as the material under treatment may be used.
