Abstract

An unburned basic refractory resistant to slaking by water is obtained by shaping a mixture of a chemical binder, and a refractory, containing at least 5% of uncombined magnesia and contacting with an aqueous solution of a water soluble phosphate or of phosphoric acid. Specified refractories are chrome ore, dead burned magnesite, caustic calcined magnesia, and forsterite, whilst the preferred binder is liquin waste liquor. A list of suitable phosphates is given, and ball clay can be included for plasticity.
