Abstract
A process for the production of building blocks and the like of carbonated lime consists in aerating a mass of hydrated lime and water and then subjecting moulded blocks thereof, preferably in porous moulds, to the action of carbon-dioxide in a heated chamber to dry and carbonate the lime simultaneously. For large blocks, the cellular calcium carbonate so formed is crushed and used as an aggregate with a binder of lime slurry which may or may not be aerated, the mixture then being moulded and subjected to the action of carbon dioxide in a heated chamber. In an example, a slurry is made of 1000 parts by weight of hydrated lime and 1400 parts of water. This is aerated with two volumes of bubbles to one of slurry and poured into moulds of perforated or woven metal or other material. The moulds are loaded on to trucks and passed into a heated chamber or tunnel through which carbon dioxide gas circulates. The initial temperature is preferably about 120 DEG F. The blocks may be covered with a surface layer of solid carbonated lime.
