Abstract
Water resistant bodies consisting mainly of calcium hydroxide are obtained from moistened lumps of calcium oxide or from solid bodies produced by moulding calcium hydroxide with water by treating the initial materials with carbon dioxide or a gas containing it at ordinary temperature until say 5--10 per cent of carbon dioxide is absorbed, and then raising the temperature gradually above 100 DEG C., say to 200--300 DEG C., until the product is sufficiently dehydrated to be stable in contact with water. The heating may take place in the presence of carbon dioxide, and the final product also be allowed to cool in the presence of this gas. The water content of the final product may correspond to that of monohydrated calcium hydroxide.
