Abstract
Solid compositions containing paraformaldehyde are obtained by mixing solutions of formaldehyde and of a silicate to form a homogeneous composition of silica gel and formaldehyde polymer. The formaldehyde concentration in the mixed solutions should be at least 10 and preferably 20 per cent. The mixture may be acidified and/or warmed to facilitate formation of the silica gel and polymerization of the aldehyde. The composite gel may be dehydrated at a temperature not exceeding 70 DEG C. to yield a dry friable product containing up to 95 per cent of aldehyde, which can be readily liberated by solution or volatilization. It is suitable for use as a fungicide, fumigant, or bactericide.ALSO:Solid compositions containing paraformaldehyde are obtained by mixing solutions of formaldehyde and of a silicate and acidifying or warming if necessary to produce polymerization of the aldehyde and formation of silica gel. The resulting composite gel may be dehydrated at temperatures up to 70 DEG C. to yield a dry friable product containing up to 95 per cent of aldehyde, which can be readily liberated by solution or volatilization. The product is useful as a fumigant, fungicide, or bactericide, e.g. in the sterilization of soil.
