Abstract

Alkali metal aluminate solutions containing gallium are treated, e.g. by the addition of lime to the solution at above 100 DEG F. to convert sufficient of the alkali metal aluminate to alkali metal hydroxide and insolubilized aluminium values that the atomic ratio of dissolved aluminium to dissolved gallium is p 25-100:1, the alumina and gallium oxide are co-precipitated by an acidic material, e.g. carbonic acid, carbon dioxide or sodium bicarbonate, the precipitate dissolved in an acid or alkaline solution, e.g. caustic soda. Gallium may be recovered by electrodeposition. The precipitate, which is preferably heated to 350-600 DEG C. to destroy organic matter, and to allow a more ready dissolution, may contain gallium oxide equal to 2 per cent by weight of the alumina. Part of the dissolved aluminium may be precipitated as alumina prior to the addition of lime. Specifications 671,356 and 674,104 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 622,560.
