Abstract
Earthy minerals such as clay are bleached by treatment in aqueous suspension first with a hydrosulphurous acid compound such as zinc hydrosulphite, and then with an alkaline reagent such as caustic alkali, alkali carbonate, trialkali phosphate, or borax in sufficient amount to cause thickening of the clay slip. Thickening when zinc hydrosulphite is used occurs with the precipitation of zinc oxide. When caustic soda is used for the treatment barium zinc, or calcium chloride may also be present. A clay treated with potassium carbonate may be treated with magnesium sulphate to remove excess alkalinity and precipitate magnesium carbonate. Successive alternate treatments with hydrosulphite and excess alkali up to the thickening point of the clay slip may be given. Examples of procedure are furnished. According to the Provisional Specification, the hydrosulphite may be replaced by any other bleaching reagent, and the alkaline reagents may include alkaline-earth metal hydrates or carbonates.
