Abstract

279,694. Parker, T. W., and Dartmoor China Clay Co., Ltd. Feb. 28, 1927. Aluminium silicate; silicates in general.-Clay and other minerals containing iron are bleached or decolorised by treatment with acid, with or without a reducing agent, and with aqueous solutions of soluble salts, the bases of which do not form coloured compounds with non-chromophoric acid radicles, which are not reducing agents, and of which the acid radicles do not form insoluble iron compounds. Salts of polyvalent metals, particularly salts of aluminium, calcium, barium, or magnesium, or ammonium salts may be employed, the use of aluminium sulphate, or sodium, potassium, or ammonium alums is particularly advantageous. The salt may be added to the bleaching acid, or to the water used for washing the treated clay or to both; or be mixed with the clay suspension before the latter is treated: or be formed in situ by addition of a metal, its oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate, to the. bleaching acid, or to the washing water with addition to acid. The water used to wash the treated clay may contain alkali to neutralise any acid remaining therein.
