Abstract

A magnesium alumino silicate, of formula MgO.Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O, is prepared by mixin an aqueous sodium aluminate solution, having an Al2O3/Na2O ratio of 1 : 1 to 1 : 3 and an alumina concentration of 1.7% to 6.9%, with an aqueous sodium silicate solution, having a silica concentration of 2% to 8%, in a mol. ratio more than 1 : 2 of Al2O3 to SiO2, to form a reaction mixture containing sodium alumino silicate, and forming magnesium aluminosilicate from this mixture by adding magnesium hydroxide. The product is washed with an aqueous solution of aluminium sulphate or a mineral acid, further washed with water, and dried. The magnesium hydroxide may be formed in situ by adding a magnesium salt to the reaction mixture. In an example, magnesium chloride is added to the reaction mixture, and, after washing, the product is dried in two stages, firstly below 100 DEG C. and then at 250 DEG C. The product has antiacid properties.
