Abstract
Glyoxal in aqueous medium is reacted with an alkali metal silicate to give a sol which will set to a hardenable gel. The glyoxal/silica mixture is suitable for incorporation as a filler in rubber latex; data given indicate that the vulcanizates produced have enhanced modulus at 300% and resistance to tearing (Example 6).ALSO:Glyoxal in aqueous medium is reacted with an alkali metal silicate to give a sol which will set to a hardenable gel. The glyoxal/silica mixture is suitable for the tanning of gelatine.ALSO:Glyoxal in aqueous medium is reacted with an alkali metal silicate to give a sol which will set to a hardenable gel. The glyoxal/silica mixture is suitable for the impregnation of viscose rayon crepe de chine to give improved weight, swelling and warp shrinkage effects as well as a permanent matting of the fabric.ALSO:Glyoxal in aqueous medium is reacted with an alkali metal silicate to give a sol which will set to a hardenable gel. The alkali metal silicate may be employed in the form of a commercial aqueous solution of sodium or potassium silicate, e.g. in which the ratio between the number of molecules of SiO2 and the number of molecules of Na2O ranges from 3 to 4 and the aqueous solution of sodium silicate may have a strength of from 35 DEG to 50 DEG Be; or the commercial aqueous solution of the alkali metal silicate may be diluted. The glyoxal is employed in the form of a neutral aqueous solution, for example 30%, preferably in a proportion corresponding to about 5 to 20 parts by weight of this latter solution for 100 parts by weight of 36 DEG Be commercial sodium silicate solution. In a modification of the process stable siliceous hydrosols are produced by mixing glyoxal and an aqueous solution of an acid and introducing into this acid glyoxal solution an aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate, the proportions so adjusted as to form a hydrosol which is weakly acid, if necessary in a pH region approaching neutrality.ALSO:Glyoxal in aqueous medium is reacted with an alkali metal silicate to give a sol which will set to a hardenable gel. Exemplified use is the conversion of waste water into hard removable masses by adding the mixture to nitric acid, sugar and molasses waste.ALSO:Glyexal in aqueous sodium is reacted with an alkali metal silicate to give a sol which will set to a hardenable gel. The alkali metal silicate may be employed in the form of a commercial aqueous solution of sodium or potassium silicate, e.g. in which the ratio between the number of molecules of SiO2 and the number of molecules of Na2O ranges from 3 to 4 and the aqueous solution of sodium silicate may have a strength of from 35 DEG to 50 DEG Be; or the commercial aqueous solution of the alkali metal silicate may be diluted. The glyoxal is employed in the form of a neutral aqueous solution, for example 30%, preferably in a proportion corresponding to about 5 to 20 parts by weight of this latter solution for 100 parts by weight of 36 DEG Be commercial sodium silicate solution. Kaolin or potatoe starch may be added to the reactants to accelerate the hardening.
