Abstract
<PICT:0800694/III/1> Finely divided silica is produced by treating the surface of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate with an acid-reacting substance and drawing the treated surface into the body of the solution, and dispersing it therein, by means of a rotary stirrer 3 having arcuate blades 9, a fresh surface thereby being formed for treatment. The reaction vessel may be provided with baffles 5. The atmosphere above the silicate solution may be sprayed with a solution of the acid from a pipe 11 and the spray may strike the surface of the solution. A conventional lawn soaker spray may be employed. When using a solution of an acid gas or a readily volatile liquid acid, the solution may be sprayed at an elevated temperature, e.g. above 50 DEG C., so as to saturate the atmosphere with the acid. An acid gas may also be supplied as such to the atmosphere. Acidreacting substances specified are hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, sulphurous, phosphoric, hydrobromic and carbonic acid, aluminium chloride and sulphate, and ammonium chloride. Sodium silicate of the formula Na2O(SiO2)x, where x is 2-4 is preferably employed, but sodium monosilicate and potassium silicates may also be employed. The silicate solution may contain sodium chloride or sulphate and the aqueous acid calcium or aluminium chloride. One half of the silicate may be neutralized over a period of 100 minutes. Thereafter neutralization may be effected at a more rapid rate and by the use of other methods. In the example a sodium silicate solution at a temperature of 149-152 DEG F. was stirred by means of a turbo agitator rotating at 70 r.p.m. and was sprayed with 12.2 N hydrochloric acid at a temperature of 25 DEG C. for a period of 329 minutes, after which time the resulting slurry had a pH of 7. The slurry was then boiled for 1 hour giving a pH of 8.5, allowed to cool and further hydrochloric acid added, giving a pH of 8.2. After decanting the mother liquor, the silica was treated with 0.225 per cent of a mixture of dimethyl dialkyl ammonium chlorides in aqueous solution, and the mother liquor again decanted. The silica after drying has a surface area of 121 sq.m/gm. Specification 745,822 is referred
