Abstract
Finely divided silica is prepared by reacting a finely divided alkaline earth metal silicate, for example calcium silicate of an average particle size of below 0.1 micron with an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride which may also contain, ammonia, and/or sodium chloride using calcium silicate. Sufficient ammonium chloride to decompose all the calcium silicate is preferably employed. From 5 to 50 gm./l of free ammonia and from 25 to 100 gm./l of sodium chloride may be employed. Reaction may be effected by adding an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride to an aqueous slurry of calcium silicate with agitation and heating to drive off free ammonia. The slurry after removal of ammonia may be treated with an acid, such as hydrochloric, nitric or acetic acid, which forms a water soluble compound with calcium. The calcium silicate may be prepared by various methods and natural products such as wollastonite may also be employed. Finely divided calcium silicate of the required particle size may be prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of an alkali metal silicate, for example sodium silicate, and calcium chloride under conditions of high turbulence, for example by introducing the two streams closely together into the central area of a centrifugal pump, and in such proportions that an excess of calcium chloride is established. The calcium silicate is preferably prepared in a concentration of 5 to 150 gm./l. The alkali metal silicate preferably has the formula M2O(SiO2)x, where x is between 2 and 4.ALSO:Finely divided silica prepared by reacting an alkaline earth metal silicate, e.g. calcium silicate, of an average ultimate particle size of below 0,1 micron with an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride may be employed as a diluent for benzene hexachloride, D.D.T., chlordane and 2, 4-D.
