Abstract

Sodium metaborate hydrates are stabilized by heating particles thereof in admixture with either phthalic anhydride, boric anhydride or metaboric acid. According to examples: (1) boric anhydride was added to sodium metaborate tetrahydrate in a concentration of 10 per cent and heated for 4 hours at 70 DEG C.; (2) 2.5 per cent of phthalic anhydride was added to the metaborate and the mixture heated as in (1) above; (3) 10 per cent of metaboric acid was employed and the mixture heated as before; (4) 10 per cent phthalic anhydride was added to sodium metaborate and the mixture heated at 40 DEG C. for 30 days; (5) per cent boric anhydride was added to sodium metaborate and the mixture was dusted on a metal plate heated to 400 DEG C. Water was explosively driven off leaving a product containing 9.1 per cent water. Specifications 585,366 and 698,311, [both in Group XX], are referred to.
