Abstract
Alpha-methylstyrene is obtained by heating dimethylphenylcarbinol in the presence of an organic carboxylic acid which is substantially non-volatile under the reaction conditions and which has an ionisation constant of 1 x 10-4 to 1 x 10-2 measured at 25 DEG C. The preferred acids are citric acid and phthalic acid, however, lactic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and salicylic acid may be used. The acids may be introduced in the solid state, in aqueous solution, or in the form of salts if sufficient mineral acid is present. The process may be accelerated by the addition of phenol.
