Abstract
In a method of oxidising in a liquid phase cumene to cumene hydroperoxide, the sodium salt of the cumene hydroperoxide is used as an accelerator preferably in the proportion of at least 50 parts by weight of the salt to 10,000 parts by weight of cumene. The operation is preferably carried out at atmospheric or super atmospheric pressure and atmospheric air being employed at the oxidising agent and at a temperature between 70 and 120 DEG C., the atmospheric air being deprived of its carbon dioxide content. In an example 5 kgs. of cumene and 5 grams of monosodium salt of cumene hydroperoxide are stirred in an autoclave at 95 DEG C. and air deprived of carbon dioxide and cleaned is injected up to 6 effective atmospheres until a quantity of oxygen corresponding to 200 litres is reached. After 6 hours the reaction product is cooled and discharged and has a cumene hydroperoxide content of 25%. Specification 895,622 is referred to.
