Abstract

N-methyl-para-aminophenol is prepared by heating para-hydroxy-phenylglycine in solution in a ketone or mixture of ketones having a boiling point below 145 DEG C., the reaction being carried out under elevated pressure at an elevated temperature. The pressure preferably exceeds 10 atmospheres and the temperature is kept at or above 145 DEG C. The examples describe the preparation of N-methyl-para-aminophenol, using acetone and methyl-ethyl-ketone as solvents, respectively.
