Abstract

Crystals of anhydrous sodium metasilicate are obtained by forming a solution of sodium metasilicate containing say at least 50 per cent of metasilicate at temperatures above 72 DEG C., and heating the solution, say to 90--120 DEG C. or above. By stirring and evaporating continuously all the water may be removed and a dry product be obtained directly. The metasilicate solution may be obtained by treating a water-glass solution with caustic soda, or by treating ground silicate of soda glass or finely ground silica with caustic soda in the presence of added water. By having present in the metasilicate solution substances such as sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, other alkaline salts, or a soap, mixtures of crystals in intimate association may be obtained, and the additional substance may combine with any residual water. An example is given of the production of a mixture of sodium hydroxide monohydrate and anhydrous sodium metasilicate. The products are suitable for use as detergents.
