Abstract
Crystals are obtained by adding a concentrated aqueous solution of the substance to be crystallized at a temperature above its supersaturation point to a solution of another substance promoting its crystallization, the mixture being cooled to and maintained at a temperature at which the solution to be crystallized would by itself be supersaturated. In an example a solution of sodium silicate containing 21,8 per cent Na2O and 21,1 per cent SiO2 at 60 DEG C., is added to a cold 20 per cent caustic soda solution and the mixture cooled to and maintained at a temperature of 22 DEG C. to give crystals corresponding to Na2SiO3 9H2O. The caustic solution may be replaced by a solution consisting of 5 per cent caustic soda and 15 per cent common salt. Sodium carbonate in the form of needles of Na2CO3, 7H2O is obtained by the addition of a warm solution containing 15,5 per cent NaOH and 13,4 per cent anhydrous Na2CO3 to a 22 per cent caustic soda solution, the mixture being maintained at 20 DEG C. Sodium nitrate solution is used in promoting the crystallization of borax. Specifications 427,496 and 427,497 are referred to.
