Abstract

Alkali metal silicates having a M2O : SiO2 ratio of 1.65 : 1 to 2.25 : 1 are prepared by mixing at 90-160 DEG C. an alkali metal silicate solution having a M2O : SiO2 ratio of 1 : 1 to 1 : 3.4 with an alkali metal hydroxide solution of 55 to 74 per cent strength in quantities calculated to produce a mixture having a M2O : SiO2 ratio of at least 3 : 1, and a total solids content of 40-55 per cent calculated as alkali metal oxide and silicon dioxide, and thereafter cooling to 65 DEG to 90 DEG C. and allowing the mass to set and crystallize. The preferred M2O : SiO2 ratio in the mixture is from 3 : 1 to 6 : 1 and the mixture may be effected at temperatures of 90 DEG to 135 DEG C. According to an example water glass solution is mixed with 70 per cent sodium hydroxide to produce a Na2O : SiO2 ratio of 3.94 : 1, the mixing being effected at 95 DEG C. The mixture is then cooled to 86 DEG C. and held at this temperature until crystallization is complete the mass is then stirred to form a slurry and the crystals centrifuged and dried to produce a product having a Na2O : SiO2 ratio of 2 : 1; further examples relate to a product having Na2O : SiO2 ratios of 2.02 : 1, 1.85 : 1, 2.23 : 1, 1.87 : 1 and 1.93 : 1, the differing ratios resulting from the temperature to which the mixture is heated and the rate and degree of the cooling. The products are stated to be combinations of sesquisilicate and associated caustic. The invention is applicable to silicates of Li, Na, K, Cs and Rb. Specification 790,285 is referred to.
