Abstract

A synthetic zeolitic molecular sieve of composition K2O : Al2O3 : 2SiO2 : XH2O, where X is any value up to 3, designated as zeolite Z, is prepared by forming a gel having a composition K2O : Al2O3 : nSiO2, where n is from 1 to 7, from an aqueous solution containing materials supplying oxides of potassium, aluminium and silicon, holding the gel at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. in the presence of potassium <PICT:0828936/III/1> hydroxide, the temperature and gel composition being correlated to fall within the shaded area shown in Fig. 1. Crystals of zeolite Z in potassium form, are finally separated. Other forms of zeolite Z are prepared by exchanging the potassium cation for other ions such as sodium or calcium by treating with nitrates or chlorides of these latter metals. The X-ray characteristics of the potassium form of zeolite Z are quoted. According to an example, potassium hydroxide, aluminium hydroxide and silicic acid, containing 15% by weight silica, were mixed in a mol. ratio K2O : Al2O3 : 4SiO2 and the gel which formed was dried and mixed with potassium hydroxide solution to form a mixture having a molar composition K2O/SiO2 =0.58, SiO2/Al2O3=4 and H2O/K2O=316, the mixture was heated at 120 DEG C. for 3 to 4 days and the product was filtered, washed and dried. The trihydrated zeolite obtained was dehydrated at 300 DEG C. Zeolite Z may be used to absorb water and ammonia from mixtures with other materials.
