Abstract

541,861. Detergents. HALL. LABORATORIES, Inc. April 3, 1940, No. 6016. Convention date, May 1, 1939. [Class 91] The corrosion of soft metals such as aluminium, tin, zinc, lead, cadmium or alloys thereof by an alkaline detergent comprising mainly and at least 50 per cent. of an alkali metal silicate is inhibited-by the addition of. a water soluble salt of barium or strontium. The alkalinity in aqueous solution preferably corresponds to a pH of at least 10. The silicates specified comprise sodium metasilicate sesquisilicate or orthosilicate. Smaller proportions of other alkalies may be used with the silicate and sodium hydroxide, phosphates such as Na 3 PO 4 and carbonates are specified. The preferred salts of barium and strontium comprise the chloride, and nitrate of both and barium hydroxide and formate. The compositions may also contain soap, casein, deflocculating agents, wetting agents or abrasives. The barium or strontium salt is added in an amount between 2-10 per cent. by weight of the silicate. Two of the specified examples comprise sodium meta- or orthosilicate, 95 per cent.; Ba or SrCl 2 , 5 per cent.; and sodium metasilicate, 60 per cent.; NaOH, 35 per cent.; Ba or SxCl 2 , 5 per cent. respectively. Suitable strengths of the detergent solution are given for particular purposes. U.S.A. Specification 2,037,566 is referred to.
