Abstract

A dry, solid calcium hypochlorite-soda ash composition contains 1 to 50 per cent by weight of a finely divided anhydrous crystalline calcium carbonate which has a solubility in water not exceeding that of aragonite. The calcium carbonate may be aragonite, calcite or a commercial product containing a minor proportion of vaterite, or may be formed from part of the soda ash by adding a solution of calcium chloride and removing the water by drying. The composition may also include quicklime and sodium chloride and may be used in conjunction with soap for laundry purposes, the added calcium carbonate serving to inhibit the formation of calcium soaps.ALSO:Aqueous sodium hypochlorite solutions, which contain calcium carbonate in a form which does not react with soap, are prepared by adding calcium hypochlorite, soda ash and finely divided anhydrous crystalline calcium carbonate to water, the calcium carbonate having a solubility in water not exceeding that of aragonite, whereby the soda ash and calcium hypochlorite react to form sodium hypochlorite, and calcium carbonate is precipitated in a form the solubility of which is less than that of calcium soaps. The added calcium carbonate may be aragonite, calcite or a commercial product containing a minor proportion of vaterite or may be formed from part of the soda ash by adding a solution of calcium chloride and removing the water by drying. The dry composition may also include quicklime and sodium chloride.
