Abstract

A detergent composition comprises (a) one or more sulphated or sulphonated anionic detergents, (b) one or more non-ionic detergents, and (c) one or more fatty acyl alkanolamides. Component (a) generally comprises 25-85 per cent of active material present, and is preferably an alkyl sulphate, an alkylaryl sulphonate or an alkyl sulphonate, in the form of a water-soluble, including an organic base, salt, but other suitable types of sulphated or sulphonated detergent are also listed. Component (b) may be an ethylene oxide condensate with an aliphatic acid or with an alkylnaphthol but is preferably either a compound obtained by condensing 8-10 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide with 1 molecular proportion of octylphenol or octylcresol, or a compound obtained by reacting 10-20 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide with 1 molecular proportion of oleyl alcohol, and generally comprises 3-40 per cent of the active material. The fatty acyl alkanolamide, which is derived from fatty acids having 10-14 carbon atoms, is usually present to the extent of 10-72 per cent of the active material, and is suitably the monoethanolamide of lauric, capric, myristic, coconut or palm kernel fatty acids, or the corresponding mono-iso- or mono-n-propanolamide, or mono-iso- or mono-n-butanolamide, or the diethanolamides and the di-isopropanolamides of such fatty acids. Preferred compounds are lauric or myristic acid mono- or diethanolamide or mono-isopropanolamide. The compositions are generally produced as solutions in water to which ethanol or other mono- or poly-hydric alcohols may be added. Additionally, adjuncts such as sodium chloride, sulphate, meta-silicate, carbonate, bicarbonate, percarbonate, and perborate, sodium or potassium phosphates or polyphosphates, urea, salts of ethylenediamine tetracetic acid and carboxymethylcellulose, b -methyl umbelliferone, decahydronaphthalene, and trichlorethylene may also be incorporated. If preferred, the compositions may be produced as pastes, slurries, or powders.
