Abstract

Wool is scoured and bleached by treating with an aqueous liquor containing soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, soap and sodium chlorite, and the ratio of sodium carbonate to sodium bicarbonate is maintained during the process substantially within the range 1 : 0.5 to 1 : 2. Sodium chlorite may be used in concentration equivalent to 0.01 to 2.0 per cent of available chlorine. When treating shorn or other acidic wools the required ratio is maintained by adding sodium hydroxide solution as make-up liquor to the scouring bowls, but in the case of pulled or alkaline wools the ratio is maintained by addition of sodium bicarbonate or an acid or acid salt such as an acid phosphate.
