Abstract
Wool is scoured with an aqueous solution comprising soda ash, sodium bicarbonate and soap, and the ratio of sodium carbonate to sodium bicarbonate is maintained at all times within the range 1 : 0.5 to 1 : 2. When treating shorn or other acidic wools, the addition of caustic soda is necessary during the scouring to convert the excess of bicarbonate formed back into carbonate, but with a "pulled" wool, where bicarbonate is not formed as an incident of the scouring as the wool is alkaline from pretreatment with lime, the addition of bicarbonate is necessary in order to keep the ratio within the range indicated.
