Abstract

Fibrous orientated polyacrylonitrile is hydrolysed by a process characterised in that the hydrolysis process is commenced employing at least 15 parts of aqueous alkaline hydrolysis liquor for each part of fibrous orientated polyacrylonitrile and in that the hydrolysis is conducted at substantially the boiling point of the hydrolysis liquor. The hydrolysis liquor may be an aqueous solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide, and may contain small amounts of surface active agents or water-miscible solvents such as ethyl alcohol. The products may be used as thickening, dispersing and flocculating agents.
