Abstract

The invention comprises 6-methyl-8-hydroxyergoline of the formula <FORM:0709373/IV (b)/1> and a process for the preparation thereof by treating 31-amino-1-methyl-3-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro - 5,6 - benzoquinoline - 7 - carboxylic acid lactam of the formula <FORM:0709373/IV (b)/2> with a reducing agent capable of converting a C=O group to a CH group. The process may be carried out with an alkali metal and an alcohol, e.g. n-butanol. In the example, the process is carried out with n-butanol and sodium. The 8-acetyl derivative of 6-methyl-8-hydroxy-ergoline is also referred to. Specification 705,436 is referred to.
