Abstract

522,218. Lustring. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. Dec. 8, 1938, No. 35851. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1937. [Class 15 (ii)] The pile of wool rugs and carpets is lustred by subjecting the pile to treatment in an aqueous caustic alkali solution in which the alkali concentration is less than 6 grams per litre and insufficient to adversely affect the pile, and then to treatment in an aqueous solution containing calcium hypochlorite, the concentration of available chlorine in the solution being within the range of 0.75 to 3 grams per litre. Preferably the calcium hypochlorite is substantially free from calcium chloride, and it may contain more than 50 per cent. of available chlorine. Subsequently to the hypochlorite treatment, the materials may be subjected to washing or to treatment with dilute acids, e.g., formic or acetic acids. Specification 317,437, [Class 15 (ii)], is referred to.
