Abstract

526,647. Cleaning rugs. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. March 24, 1939, No. 9252. Convention date, June 2, 1938. [Class 15 (ii)] Rugs are cleaned by treating them with an aqueous solution comprising the supernatant liquid of a mixture formed by dissolving in water a stable calcium hypochlorite, sodium carbonate in excess of that necessary to react with all of the calcium present, and a synthetic organic water-soluble detergent salt which does not produce an insoluble precipitate in the presence of calcium ions. Sodium bicarbonate may also be present in the solution. The calcium hypochlorite used contains more than 50 per cent., and preferably more than 60 per cent. of available chlorine, and may be prepared as described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,481,039, 1,481,040, 1,713,650, 1,713,654, 1,713,668 and 1,713,669. Detergent salts specified are sodium lauryl sulphate and sulphonate, ethane-1-palmityl-2-sodium sulphonate, ethane 1-(methyl-lauramide)-2-sodium sulphonate and palmityl trimethyl ammonium chloride The preparations described in Specification 526,646 may be used in making the solutions. In cleaning the rug, the reverse side and then the right side may be successively treated with the solutions. Examples are given.
