[Class 81 (i)] [Also in Groups III and IV] A disinfecting detergent e.g., for rugs is prepared by intimately mixing (1) a dry stable calcium hypochlorite containing more than 50 per cent. of available chlorine and less than 10 per cent. of calcium chloride (2) sodium carbonate in excess of that necessary to react with all the calcium in the mixture and (3) a synthetic organic water-soluble detergent salt which does not produce a precipitate in presence of calcium ions and is (a) a quaternary ammonium salt containing at least one substituent group having at least 8C. atoms, or (b) an ammonium or an alkali or alkaline earth metal higher alcohol sulphate or a long chain sulphonate. Sodium bicarbonate may be added. When the compound is dissolved in water the precipitated calcium carbonate may be removed or not. The hypochlorite preferably contains more than 60 per cent. of available chlorine and only 2-3 per cent. of calcium chloride ; it may be prepared as described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,481,039, 1,481,040, 1,713,650, 1,713,654, 1,713,668 and 1,713,669. Detergent salts specified are sodium lauryl sulphate and sulphonate, ethane 1-palmitate 2-sodium sulphonate, ethane 1 (methyl lauramido) 2-sodium sulphonate and palmityl trimethyl ammonium chloride. In an example, 20 lb. of sodium carbonate, 16 lb. of calcium hypochlorite, and 30 lb. of sodium lauryl sulphate with small proportions of sodium myristyl sulphate and sodium palmityl sulphate are mixed together ; 2 lb. of the mixture is stirred into 50 gallons of water at 72'F., the precipitated calcium carbonate settled out, and the clear solution used with a mechanical rotary brush to clean a rug.
