Abstract
The felting and shrinking property of wool is reduced by treatment of the wool or woollen goods in a bath comprising, for every 100 lbs. of wool to be treated, a solution of 4 lbs. of potassium permanganate in 250 gallons of water to which about 7.7 lbs. of 66 per cent commercial sulphuric acid is added. The wool, which may be loose, tops, yarns, piece or manufactured goods, is kept immersed in the bath until the reaction has proceeded to the desired extent, i.e. for about 30 minutes. During the treatment manganese dioxide is deposited on or formed within the material, imparting to it a brown colour. This may be removed readily by treatment with any of the usual reagents, sulphurous acid, sodium bisulphite, hydrogen peroxide, oxalic acid and the like. Hydrochloric acid in the form of gas or solution may be used: in this case the chlorine evolved will impart further shrinkproofing to the wool as is well known, so that in this case a smaller quantity of permanganate may be used to achieve the desired result.
