Abstract

In the treatment of animal fibres, particularly in scouring p wool prior to carding and spinning, use is made of a neutralized sulphonated oil that has been subjected to electrolysis and/or to high-tension or high-frequency discharge. An aqueous solution of such oil is preferably used, with or without addition of a bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide, sulphur dioxide, or sodium peroxide, hypochlorite, bisulphite, or hydrosulphite. The electrical treatment of the sulphonated oil depresses its hydrogen ion concentration, e.g. to pH 7,5-8, and may effect ozonization of the oil, particularly when high-tension or high-frequency discharge is applied. The sulphonated oil may be derived from a vegetable, animal or fish oil, preferably from castor or olive oil. In scouring wool, the fat which separates out may be withdrawn and purified.
