Abstract
Gum and other incrustatious matter is removed from ramie fibre in the form of China grass by treating it with an aqueous solution of a non-alkaline aluminium salt of an inorganic acid of approximately 0.2 per cent strength. For example, the China grass may be treated with a 0.2 per cent solution of potassium alum, ammonium alum, sodium alum, or aluminium sulphate at room temperatures for 12 to 15 hours. The fibres may be further worked up for spinning by treatment successively with caustic soda solution, hydrochloric acid solution, sodium perborate solution, caustic soda solution, hydrochloric acid solution and sodium perborate solution.ALSO:Ramie is degummed and bleached in a series of steps comprising (1) soaking in an aqueous solution of an aluminium salt of approximately 0.2 per cent strength; (2) boiling in caustic soda solution of about 1 per cent strength followed by standing; (3) immersing in a dilute solution of an acid and boiling; (4) treating with a solution of an oxidizing salt and boiling; (5) boiling with dilute caustic alkali solution followed by standing; (6) treating with an acid solution which is of lower concentration than that used in step (3), and (7) treating with a solution of an oxidizing salt of concentration lower than that used in step (4). The alkali may be caustic soda, the acid hydrochloric acid and the oxidizing salt sodium perborate. The aluminium salt may be ammonium alum, sodium alum or aluminium sulphate.
