Abstract
A process for bleaching textile articles, &c. with hydrogen peroxide consists in impregnating the material with a solution of low concentration, preferably within the limits of concentration 0,05 to 5 parts by weight per 100 parts of solution, rendered alkaline for example with water-glass, pyro-phosphate, soda lye or ammonia, preferably within the limits of concentration of 0,5 to 5 parts per 100 parts of water, the material being then maintained at the requisite temperature to complete the bleaching while preventing evaporation and radiation and without substantial addition of liquor. This latter may be effected by tightly packing the impregnated article in a container and surrounding it externally with bleaching fluid; or it may be soaked in a cold or warm solution of the bleaching fluid and then tightly rolled up in an atmosphere of steam. To avoid undue catalytic action upon the hydrogen peroxide the article is preferably subject to a precleaning treatment. In an example raw cotton was pretreated by impregnating it with a 0,2 per cent solution of hydrogen peroxide at 80 DEG C., made alkaline with water-glass and caustic soda. It was then tightly packed into a container and bleached for 4 hours. After washing it was treated by a 0,3 per cent solution of hydrogen peroxide at 80 DEG C., made alkaline with water-glass only, and tightly packed for 2-3 hours. It was finally squeezed and washed. The second bath may be subsequently used for a pretreating bath.
