Abstract

Purified cellulose, particularly cotton linters, is rendered more suitable for use in the production of heat stable and haze free cellulose carboxylates, by rinsing or treating it with water containing a proportion of a dissolved magnesium compound such that the treated cellulose contains a quantity of magnesium between 0.001 per cent and 0.03 per cent by weight of the cellulose and in a ratio to any calcium present of at least 1 to 3, the quantity of calcium in any case being no more than 0.03 per cent. The cellulose may be purified by any desired method, e.g. by treatment with a boiling caustic soda solution followed by treatment with dilute acid or alkaline bleach liquor, and by washing. The processing or wash water may be subjected to a water-softening treatment and the softened water may then be treated with a soluble magnesium salt to give a concentration of 5-100 parts per million of magnesium. If desired, the magnesium salt may be added to a natural water-containing calcium ions in any quantity up to about 100 parts per million and also sodium ions and the treated water may be used without removing the calcium and sodium ions. Another method of preparing the water is to pass a natural water containing calcium and sodium ions through a bed of base-exchange material which has previously been regenerated with a magnesium salt. A natural water containing a large amount of calcium and a sufficient concentration of magnesium may be treated with lime or soda ash to reduce the calcium content, but in such manner as to avoid reduction of the magnesium content as far as possible, e.g. by carrying out the operation in presence of a slurry containing solid magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate. The magnesium compound dissolved in the water for treating the cellulose may be a sulphate, chloride, bromide, nitrate, carbonate, bicarbonate, or hydroxide.
