Abstract

In the preparation of absorbents for the treatment of beer and wort to remove substances such as albumen, montmorillonite-type aluminium silicates are treated for the removal of arsenic with hydrochloric acid at a concentration of at least 5 per cent and preferably between 10 to 15 per cent, and then washed with a solution of a neutral salt of an alkali metal such as sodium chloride of such a concentration that swelling is inhibited. When calcium bentonite, or other non-swellable material, is being treated, such a washing solution serves the dual purpose of removing acid and replacing calcium by alkali metal. A small amount of alkali or ammonia may be added to the washing out liquid to aid neutralization.
