Abstract

1,240,678. Treatment of acid activated montmorillonite. BRAUEREI INDUSTRIE A.G. FUR. 3 July, 1968, No. 31701/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C6] An acid activated montmorillonite mineral is treated with an aqueous solution of citric, oxalic, or ethylenediamine-tetra-acetic acid or a salt of one of these acids, or mixtures thereof, and then washed with water. The treatment reduces the amount of Fe and Al transferred to beer or wine when the product is used as an adsorbent therein. The product may be pressed or dried partially or completely, and may be formed into a suspension using a highspeed disperser. In the examples, Ca bentonite was preswelled with water, boiled in cone. HC1 to activate, filtered, washed, and treated with the reagent (citric and oxalic acids and their Na salts) while on the filter.
