Abstract
Impurities of an organic nature are removed from aqueous solutions of sugars by treating the solutions with water-insoluble synthetic resin gels which have been obtained by the condensation of aldehydes with phenols or with aromatic amines in an aqueous medium, and which have undergone no or substantially no after-treatment by drying, any proteins present in the sugar solutions being removed as far as possible before the solutions are treated with the gels, preferably by precipitation with bentonite at a pH of between 4 and 7. The treatment with the resin gels may be combined with one or more treatments with cation- or anion-exchanging substances, preferably with hydrogen- or hydroxyl-exchanging substances, these treatments preferably comprising a pre-treatment with a cation-exchanging substance and a subsequent treatment with an anion-exchanging substance. The gels may be used both in suspension and preferably in fixed layers, if desired, together with other adsorbents or with filter aids such as diatornaceous earths or activated carbon; they can be regenerated by treatment with alkali followed by treatment with acid.
