Abstract

Ion-exchange substances obtained by treating wood or naturally-occurring decomposition products of vegetable matter with sulphuric acid, sulphur trioxide or chlor-sulphonic acid are used for treating water or converting aqueous salt solutions into solutions of acids or obtaining a solution of the salt of one acid from a solution of the corresponding salt of another acid. The production of suitable ion-exchange substances is described in Specification 450,574, [Group I]. The substances are regenerated by treatment with acid or salt solutions. The method of obtaining a solution of sodium chloride from one of sodium sulphate is described by way of example. The sulphate solution is passed through the exchange material, sodium ions being retained. On regeneration of the material with hydrochloric acid, the effluent liquid is a solution of sodium chloride.ALSO:Ion-exchange substances obtained by treating wood or naturally-occurring decomposition products of vegetable matter with sulphuric acid, sulphur trioxide or chlor-sulphonic acid are used for treating water or converting aqueous salt solutions into solutions of acids, or obtaining a solution of the salt of one acid from a solution of the corresponding salt of another acid. The production of suitable ion-exchange substances is described in Specification 450,574. The substances are regenerated by treatment with acid or salt solutions. Water which has been treated with one of these substances having an acid reaction may be further treated with a base-exchange material having an alkaline reaction after carbonic acid has been driven off by heating or it may be treated with baryta or other reagent to remove the sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. A water containing sulphate may be obtained by bringing the water into contact with one of the carbonaceous substances having an acid reaction removing carbonic acid by heat treatment, precipitating hydrochloric acid as insoluble chloride and adding alkali or alkaline salt to react with the sulphuric acid to form a soluble sulphate. Or the water after treatment with the carbonaceous substance may be caused to flow quickly over marble or other alkaline earth carbonate, such as dolomite or magnesite. Neutral water may be obtained by mixing water which has been passed through carbonaceous material having an acid reaction with water containing carbonates, produced by passage through ordinary zeolites or otherwise. The method of obtaining a solution of sodium chloride from one of sodium sulphate is described by way of example of the use of the materials. The sulphate solution is passed through the exchange material, sodium ions being retained. On regeneration of the material with hydrochloric acid, the effluent liquid is a solution of sodium chloride.
