Abstract
509,710. Glucose. NAAMLOOZEVENNOOTSCHAP OCTROOIEN MAATSCHAÌPIJ ACTIVIT. Jan. 19, 1938, No. 1830. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1937. [Class 127] The acid conversion of starch and simultaneous concentration of the liquid is effected in the presence of an active carbonaceous material produced by treating carbonaceous material such as sawdust with dehydrating chemicals such as sulphuric or phosphoric acid or zinc chloride. This material has base exchange properties in that it will bind both inorganic and organic cations, and may be used to purify the converted juices either before or after concentration, preferably in countercurrent, as by filtering the juices through a bed of the material which may contain activated carbon, bleaching earth, aluminium hydroxide gel, silicic acid or calcium carbonate or it-may be used to -complete the conversion of partly converted and purified juices. Before purification, the juice is neutralized as by the addition of chalk, any excess being removed by means of barium carbonate or by means of the base exchange properties of the material. The conversion may be carried out with indirect heating, and may be continuous.
