Abstract

546,972. Removing silica from water. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd., and HOLMES, E. L. Jan. 3, 1941, No. 121. [Class 46] Silica is removed from water by softening the water and then passing it through a bed of activated alumina under conditions such that the pH value of the water at the surface of contact is maintained at at least 8, and preferably 8.4 or more. When exhausted, the alumina is regenerated by treating it with a dilute solution of mineral acid and, preferably after washing with water, with a dilute solution of alkali, and finally washing with water. The pH value may be imparted to the water, as by the addition of caustic soda, before treatment, but preferably is imparted also to the alumina before use or in the course of regeneration.
