Abstract

Aqueous sugar solutions having an ash content of not greater than 0.9 per cent are purified by first removing suspended matter and then, without chemical treatment, passing the liquid through a system containing a number of pairs of cation and anion exchangers, the final anion exchanger being unbuffered. At least two pairs of exchangers are used, each exchanger being in the form of a bed of cation or anion exchange material. The suspended matter may be removed in a centrifuge or by means of a filter bed which may be composed of a bed of non-activated cation or anion exchange material. Treatment is continued as long as the pH of the influent to the last anion exchanger is at least 2.9 and that of the effluent therefrom is at least 4. The exchangers are constituted by artificial resins, a list of which is supplied. Specifications 561,896 and 569,661 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 621,225.
