Abstract
548,205. Purifying gelatine. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd., and HOLMES, E. L. March 24, 1941, Nos. 3981 and 6298. Addition to 528,850. [Class 121] In purifying gelatine solutions as described in the parent Specification, by removal of mineral matters by passage through a bed of hydrogen-ion exchange material, the production of acidity in the solution is avoided by using hydrogen-ion exchange material only partly saturated with mobile hydrogen ions, the remainder being basic cations. The filter bed may be obtained by treating exchange material fully saturated with basic cations with an amount of acid insufficient to effect complete replacement of the exchangeable cations with hydrogen. Calcium salts in the gelatine solution may be replaced by sodium salts by treating the filter bed before, during or after the treatment with acid with a dilute solution of sodium chloride. The filter bed is drained and washed with water before regeneration, and is afterwards washed with water at 90-120‹F. so that after draining the bed is at a suitable temperature for treatment of gelatine solution.
