Abstract

588,694. Purifying waste water. PICKARD, J. A., and METAFILTRATION CO., Ltd. March 5, 1945, No. 5399. [Classes 46 and 111] A process for purification and re-use of soapy water consists in the addition to the water of a water-soluble magnesium salt, preferably magnesium sulphate, and the forcing of the water so treated through a filtering medium in a filter unit prior to re-use. Other soluble salts on the chloride fluoride and acetate of magnesium. In the arrangement shown, a wash-hand basin 1 is mounted above a tank 2 from which liquid can he withdrawn by a pump 3 and delivered to a filter 6 preferably of the type described in Specification 469,152 with kieselguhr as filter aid. The contents of the tank are treated with magnesium sulphate. The purified liquid may be returned to the basin 1 through a pipe 7 or may be passed from the filter 6 to a tank 11 for treatment by a base exchange material or by sodium carbonate, to precipitate excess magnesium, before the liquid is returned to the basin by way of pipe 12. The filter 6 may be a sterilizing filter, or a sterilizing substance for example sodium hypochlorate may be added to the soapy water.
