Abstract
A sol for use in the purification of an aqueous liquid is produced by admixing separate aqueous streams of sodium silicate and a metal salt, e.g. aluminium sulphate, ferrous sulphate, or ferric chloride by means of rotary paddles, or a pump or impeller. The pH of the sol produced may be 5.5-8.5, and is preferably 7-8. The apparatus (not shown) comprises means for adjusting the flow of each solution to a desired value and for adjusting the retention time of the sol before use. The sol may contain 0.8-1.2% of silica. An example is given.ALSO:A sol produced by admixing separate aqueous streams of sodium silicate and a metal salt, e.g. aluminium sulphate, ferrous sulphate, or ferric chloride (see Group III) is added to an aqueous liquid as a coagulant aid. 0,4-2,6 parts of SiO2 per million parts of water may be employed. The sol may be added between two successive additions of coagulant.
