Abstract

547,019. Obtaining chemical derivatives from sparingly soluble, compounds. OCEAN SALTS (PRODUCTS). Ltd.. and ADAMS, B. A. April 28, 1941, No. 5493. [Classes 1 (i), 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] Derivatives of sparingly soluble compounds are obtained by a process comprising forming a composite bed of the compound and an iron exchange material and passing a suitable liquid through the bed whereby concentration of the required ions is effected by alternate and repeated dissolution of the compound and ion exchange. The compound and ion exchange material may be stratified or intimately mixed together. A suitable method of producing the mixture is by passing a suspension of the compound upwardly through a column of the exchange material so that the compound is deposited in the interstitial spaces of the exchange. material. An effluent from the composite bed may be passed through an anion absorbing material and the effluent (water) from this step through the composite bed. In an example ground barytes was deposited in organic cation exchange material and after washing with water, hot water was passed through the material whereby an effluent containing sulphuric acid was obtained and passed through a bed of anion absorbing material (e.g. a metaphenylene diamine resin) from which sulphuric ions were subsequently removed by treatment with sodium carbonate to yield a solution of sodium sulphate. The barium ions were removed from the cation absorbing means by treatment with hydrochloric acid to give a solution of barium chloride.
