Abstract

1,246,664. Calcium sulphate hemihydrate. ETABS., POLIET & CHAUSSON. 2 July, 1968 [25 Aug., 1967], No. 31603/68. Heading C1A. Gypsum is heated in suspension in a mixture of water and one or more organic liquids, the mixture having a boiling point above the temperature at which gypsum dissolves in the mixture and at which temperature gypsum is converted to calcium sulphate hemihydrate, the mixture is filtered, and the residue dried by evaporation. The organic liquid may be glycol, one of its homologues, or glycerol or one of its homologues. A soluble salt of potassium, rubidium or caesium, preferably having an organic anion may also be incorporated into the mixture. Seed crystals may be produced by heating at a temperature below that of the final heating, cooling, and bringing to the temperature of the heating. Substantially all of the gypsum is preferably dissolved during the heating step. The mixture is preferably boiled during the heating step.
