Abstract

1-naphthylamine-8-sulphonic acid is separated from the mixture obtained by nitrating and reducing a -naphthalene-mono-sulphonic acid, by precipitating as free acid by acidifying a neutral or alkaline solution containing the ammonium, alkali metal, or alkaline earth salts of the mixed acids. The precipitation is effected with an agent of acid character stronger than the 1 : 8 but weaker than the 1 : 5 isomers, by means of a buffer agent capable of maintaining the hydrogen ion concentration of pH = 3,7 -- 5,3 in conjunction with a stronger acid. As buffer agents, sodium bisulphite, formate, acetate and chloracetate and acid potassium phthalate are specified. According to examples, the ammonium, alkali metal and magnesium salts of the mixed acids in solution are treated with sodium bisulphite in conjunction with hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, whereby the 1 : 8 isomer is precipitated, other acids remaining in solution.
